How to make 2022 your best year yet

How to make 2022 your best year yet. Get set to dig some goals.

If 2020-2021 has taught us anything, it’s to expect the unexpected. When it comes to goal setting, it’s fair to say we now have a solid understanding of what we can control, what really matters and a big dose of resilience that comes from navigating the unexpected.

2022 – we’re ready for whatever you throw at us.

As we set goals for 2022, we’re focused on what we can control with enough flexibility to change course when those curve balls arrive.

This year, it’s time to choose what lights you up and makes you happy. Choose to prioritise your wellbeing. Choose you.

Need some inspo? Here are the three goals we’re making this year and how you can apply them in your life. The best part - you can take on these goals at any time of the year.

In 2022, I will feel like the healthiest version of me

And no, this does not involve a weight goal. In fact, we’re not going to weigh ourselves at all this year. We’re improving our health incrementally by introducing new healthy habits into our daily routine. We choose to ritualise our health choices so that they happen without thinking e.g. Just like our zombie walk to the coffee machine each morning, we’re filling up with a litre of water as the caffeine brews.

Each new healthy habit might only make a marginal impact on our wellbeing, but building habit on habit, we’re doing some serious good. This year, new healthy habits will include some breathing exercises before we get out of bed each morning, and cold showers (eekkk!). What healthy habits can you introduce in 2022?

In 2022, I will make a difference

The most wholesome goal. This can be committing your time, skills or resources towards a cause that is important to you. It could simply be a commitment to being kinder in a world that needs it e.g. sharing gratitude with others, smiling at strangers.

The feel-good boost we get from kindness is incredibly good for our wellbeing – we could almost call it selfish!

In 2022, I will commit to learning something new

It’s easy to have our spare time sucked up by a Netflix series or mindless scrolling on socials. It’s time to take back control of what we give our attention to.

Learning something new has been demonstrated to improve our mental wellbeing - which is much more than social media sites can say. It doesn’t need to be formal study, it can be a new hobby (e.g. cooking, gardening) or a new topic (e.g. climate change) to learn about through books, podcasts or blogs.

Where will you find the time? Check the screen time break-down on your phone to see where you can take back some unproductive time.

The 2022 tool kit
And as all good goals are only as good as the execution, here are the three tools we’re using to make 2022 our best year yet:

  1. Vision board: They might sound like a woowoo concept but there is science behind vision boards. Smashing together some imagery and words that remind you of what you want your life to look and feel like activates your brain to recognise opportunities to move towards your goals. The most important part is having your board on display (we recommend your phone or desktop wallpaper) as a constant reminder that will embed deep into your subconscious.
  1. Diary: Old school diaries might seem unnecessary when you have thousands of productivity apps in the palm of your hand, but did you know that hand-writing helps to encode your goals into your brain? In fact, it’s so important that you’re 42% more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down. Now we think that’s a worthwhile investment.

“My Sunday night diary ritual helps me to reflect on the week behind me and set my intentions and schedule priorities for the week ahead. On Monday morning, I’m ready to focus on what’s important and have a good view of my capacity to say YES to the opportunities that arise during the week.”
Kylie, Powerpants founder

  1. Boundaries: The metaphysical addition to our toolkit, some solid boundaries. We know that each time we say yes to something that doesn’t align with our goals, we’re saying no to something that does. For us, if it’s not a hell yes, you know how the saying goes. Invitations, opportunities, conversations that don’t light us up? It’s a no.
(And yes, we realise this is the hard part so we’ll explore this topic another time.)
